Friends and Family Days

Wednesday was a trip with my Mum to visit relatives in Stoke-On-Trent. It was lovely to see my Granddad – the girls’ Great-Granddad – and to see my aunt and her menagerie of pets! We had a lovely day together, but K has come home wanting a pet snake. Yikes.

Today we went on a trip to the theatre with some Home Ed friends to watch Horrible Histories Barmy Britain. It was an excellent show – the performers worked so hard that it was exhausting just watching! We all laughed and had a lot of fun. If you get the chance, then you should go and see it!

Other things we have done so far this week have included a few more practical experiments for our Human Body project. We have made a lung and diaphragm model, made, painted and labelled a brain from plaster of paris, worked our way through some workbooks and done a lot of reading.

Phew. Is it really only Thursday?!

A Day Out

This week has just sped by in a blur of busy days out and busy time at home.

It makes me wonder – how did we ever find time to go to school, work, and everything else in our lives?!

We began the week with a trip into London by train. We planned to visit the Science Museum to check out their Who Am I? exhibit, to link in with our current project on The Human Body. We arrived mid-morning and wandered around the exhibits and had lots of fun playing with the experiments in Launchpad, where kids can get hands on with lots of different experiments and demonstrations. J volunteered to help out in the Rocket Show and launched a rocket into the audience. She was aiming at me but managed to hit someone else. Ha ha!

The 3D Printer Exhibition

The 3D Printer Exhibition

After lunch we were beginning to feel a little tired of the science, and so wandered over to my favourite museum of all, the Natural History Museum. It’s such a beautiful old building with a huge array of things to look at. We stayed until closing time! The highlights of the day included seeing a 3D printer in action – Katie wanted to buy one so she could use it to print herself lots of shoes! She really is my daughter. In the Nat Hist we went up to the top of the stairs and saw a slice of Sequoia tree. This was taken from a giant Sequoia called the Mark Twain Tree in California which was cut down in 1891, aged 1,341 years. The tree was felled with the sole intention of sending pieces of it around the world to be exhibited in order to show the magnificent size of these amazing trees. It is incredibly sad that this giant was cut down to become a museum artefact, but rather amazing for us to see the slice on show in London as last November we were lucky enough to visit Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, and stood on the stump that remains of this once towering sequoia. K was very excited to be able to see a part of our grand adventure that has reached London.
